As entrepreneurial enterprises are concerned, opening a restaurant is by far one of the hardest endeavors to undertake. While the rate of restaurant failure isn’t nearly as bad as it’s purported to be, restaurants do fail at a much higher rate than many other types of self starter business. For that matter, even franchised restaurants (usually the smaller “fast food” variety) have a failure rate just a few percentage points below self starters.

So what, you may ask, can entrepreneurs do to increase their chances for success?

Here are three tips to succeeding in the restaurant business that successful owners adhere to. The first of these is location. Yes, there are some restaurants located in out of the way areas that do succeed on word of mouth, but those instances compared to the instances of restaurants failing because they are in bad locations are miniscule by percentage. The safest bet is to always make sure there is plenty of traffic where you want to open up. Established areas are best, but consequently, most expensive. Don’t get in over your head with a lease that will bury your chances for success from the get-go, but don’t choose an out of the way location because it is cheap. Try to find some middle ground.

The next tip is to concentrate on solely on the things that will make people want to come in, and more importantly, want to come back. I know this sounds a little too simple, but it involves a lot more than just good food and a nice atmosphere. The key is to turn out great food, provide a great atmosphere and to have exceptional customer service, day in and day out. Whether you run a sandwich shop or a high end bistro, getting these three elements together and doing so consistently is paramount to success.

The third tip is to find and culminate good business relationships with your suppliers. Having a supply chain you can count on will allow you to concentrate on what’s important, which is running your business while at your business. You’ll need to find food distributors and a restaurant supply distributor you can count on. Food distributors that are able to deliver on time and are committed to bringing you quality products every time will help you to produce consistently good food that your customers want and eventually come to expect. A good restaurant supply company can make all the difference between having a smooth operation that allows you to run you’re back of house effectively and having to deal with subparts equipment.

Of course, there is a lot more to the restaurant business than these basics, but in the end, the basics are what separate successful restaurants from failed restaurants.

Every high-performance venture needs a tracking system. A tracking system with well-designed metrics lets everyone know how well they are doing relative to their commitments. It is a guide to whether additional or extraordinary actions need to be taken.

It is one of the first things I set up with my business coaching clients because without a clear set of objective metrics it is hard for people to be clear about their results.

Establish intentions for your project, figure out the critical success factors, determine suitable measurements for each, and set performance targets for those measures.

For example, say your intention is to increase market penetration. The measure is your venture’s sales divided by total sales in your market. Perhaps your current market share is 10% — good, you have a benchmark, and your new target is 25% by the end of the year.

That’s objective, measurable, and thus… achievable.

Make someone accountable for your project’s performance against each target.

Establish a timely tracking system for each metric, which easily gathers the necessary data.

Develop periodic interim performance targets, and a reporting structure to let everyone involved know how they are doing.

Your performance tracking systems can be kept with pen and paper, or they can be automated on your computer system. However you implement them, keep it simple and don’t let the overhead of your tracking system become a burden of any kind.

Below is a very simple system I used to keep track of my page output while writing Faster Than The Speed of Change. It was kept on a computer spreadsheet, but could just as easily been pencil on graph paper. Whenever I was below the line I had catching up to do.

Start with 0 in the lower left corner, write units of measurement along the left axis, and dates of measurement along the bottom. Draw a straight reference line from 0 to your goal, and plot your performance against that goal. Of course the reference line need not be straight; set it up in whatever way reflects the time-relationship of your goals.

I am as guilty of this as anyone. Remember, there is no such thing in business as “LUCK”. All of the really “lucky” people

I have met were successful in their business because they took action, not because they were lucky. In other words, the harder they worked, the “luckier” they became.

The Power of Action is undoubtedly an extremely important part of realizing and utilizing the unlimited potential that has been made available to you. In the center of every being, whatever its form, the power of action is present. Joy is an emotion by which the body’s power of action is increased or assisted. Make joy an integral part of your everyday life. Take a few minutes each day to do something that you enjoy doing. See the tremendous difference it makes to your ability to take action on the things you must do.

The vision of a “golden life” varies with each person. How essentially simple life is, and how we complicate it. Have you ever wondered how to make major changes in your life? Action assumes importance as you contemplate making changes. Most of what you have encountered in your life, so far, is the result of your beliefs. There are two great blessings in man’s life, thoughts and action. To change your life you must start by changing your habits of thought. “Impossible” and “can’t” must be removed from your thought processes. Science has proven that when you think you can do something that your mind will find a way to do it. Once the mind has found a way to accomplish what you desire, then action is required. Where there is action, there is life and creation. One of the turning points in your life will be when you discover the power of action, your power of action. Life has an amazing way of working out when you choose not to give up, but to harness your power of action.

Do you want to have a wildly successful business? For maximum effectiveness in life, love or business, it helps to have the right habits. Wisdom with the power of action is the true secret to wealth in life as an entrepreneur.

One of the laws of success is that the universe rewards those who take action. Action is the foundation of success. You are programming yourself for greatness and success when you take action on your goals and ideas. Acting on your goals will bring success into YOUR life. There can be no success without it.

Awaken your potential knowing that the power of action is within you. The power of action is just like dropping a stone into a pond. The ripples continue outward affecting everything around you. Education is great. Knowledge is great. Experience is great. Planning is great. Ideas are great. But the power of action is gigantic. Without it the rest is useless. You must take action to get what you want.

Most businesses invest fortunes in any way they think will make their company thrive, from advertising and brand management to environmentally and socially sound operations, but there is one aspect of that latter business trend that is of particular significance. While many consumers familiarize themselves with a company through such general avenues as the ones that are opened by a business’s marketing machine, many more seek a personal connection, and for these people, it will usually be the call centre that will be the first point of call. And while the proliferation of phone and answering equipment has, in theory, rendered this contact more user-friendly, any call centre is only as effective as its staff, and so it pays for any company to invest in treating them right.

Call centres are infamous for exhibiting one of the highest staff turnovers in the corporate world, and this is because dealing with unsatisfied customers on a daily basis can be a gruelling task. Whether consumers are justified in speaking in such a disgruntled way to a fellow human being, the fact remains that call centre workers are the first and often only face these consumers meet, and as such, they are the recipients of any dissatisfaction an individual feels for a particular corporation. And while call centre staff sign on for this sort of treatment when they commit their signature to a contract, it is often not the angry consumer that leads to their resignation, but rather the lack of support they receive from the company they work for.

Corporate social responsibility is a business concept that call centres need to embrace in order to continue to operate in the future. The notion of CSR means that companies aim to operate in a sustainable way, ensuring their continued existence in the future. Advocates of this theory suggest that all of a company’s stakeholders be treated respectfully and responsibly, and they recognize that chief among these stakeholders are a company’s staff.

Call centre staff perform a difficult job, but it should not be a thankless one. As the first representatives of any business, they perform an extremely important task, and this needs to be recognized, both in terms of financial recompense and in the guise of support from senior management. Without this recognition, the notion of business sustainability suggests that call centres will ultimately become a non-viable way of working, as staff members realize that they can earn more money, and be treated with more respect, elsewhere.

Summary:
The Chinese New Year Spectacular is a veritable feast of music, drama and dance that will fill a void in the hearts of the Chinese diaspora, many of whom, since Mao’s destructive Cultural Revolution, are no longer aware of what their true culture is. But you don’t have to be Chinese to enjoy the spectacular….

Article Body:
As far as Chinese New Year’s entertainment goes, New Tang Dynasty Television’s Chinese New Year Spectacular is a relatively new kid on the block, having made its debut only three years ago. It can’t be described as a variety show, and it’s not really a Broadway musical, but it is different to anything else out there.

Before I attended the Spectacular’s Canadian debut in Vancouver last month, I had some idea of what to expect, because my Chinese friends were raving about it, plus I had read some promotional materials put out by NTDTV. What they’re attempting to do with this traveling show is revive the true Chinese culture which was destroyed by Chairman Mao and his communist successors.

Good old Mao razed temples, burned ancient manuscripts, tortured and killed intellectuals, monks, and anyone else he didn’t like. To add insult to injury, he made everyone wear black pyjamas. During his reign, counting famines and everything else, Mao directly or indirectly managed to slaughter more people than the two world wars put together.

Nowadays, the communist party of China uses the Chinese New Year, the biggest celebration of the year for the Chinese, as a way to glorify itself and promote the communist philosophy of fight and class struggle. But Chinese Central TV’s four-hour Spring Festival Gala of acrobatics, conjuring acts and comedy skits pales in comparison the Spectacular’s elegant portrayal of the best of China’s ancient culture.

In other words, it is traditional Chinese culture without the communist rhetoric, which must be a refreshing change for the Chinese—many of whom are no longer aware of what their true culture is, especially those born after the Great Cultural Revolution.

It was refreshing for me, too, but not for that reason. On the morning of the Spectacular, I woke up depressed—an unusual state for me. I didn’t even feel like going at all, but I talked myself into it. As I became absorbed in the unusual music, the myriad of colours, the graceful movements of the dancers, I started feeling uplifted. There was a purity about the show, something immaculate and flawless, that made a deep impression on me.

If I have a complaint at all, it would be that there was only one number played by erhuist Xi Xiaochun. The piece she played was so haunting and beautiful that the audience was riveted for every second of it. The erhu is an ancient two-stringed instrument that can produce an amazingly wide range of notes. Apparently, Chinese music aligns with nature in that it is based on the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth.

The theme of the Spectacular is “Myths and Legends,” and some of the acts draw on ancient legends from the time of Buddha, Dao and Confucius—those wise beings from way back in China’s 5,000-year history who taught compassion, virtue and selflessness. China’s semi-divine culture comes through in the performances, leaving one with a wonderful feeling of… righteousness.

So, go to the Spectacular, and treat yourself to a unique experience. If you’re unable attend the live show, just contact NTDTV and they’ll send you a video.

Print Design and Layout – A Remarkable Achievement in News Magazine Design: The Economist

I’ve been designing magazines, brochures and a wide variety of printed documentation for over twenty years now and I have to admit that I have not seen a news magazine better designed than The Economist.

The Economist’s design is so intelligent and user friendly from page one that I have no idea how it can be improved upon as a news magazine.

The Economist follows a multi-layered nested design that reels the reader in from a very general level of introduction to serious in-depth reports, in a step-by-step fashion, with extremely well researched, fact-filled and superbly written news articles supported by sharp-witted photo captions, maps and illustrations.

The Front Cover of the magazine is a testimony to the considerable thought that went into its design. All the major news stories of the week are summarized on the front cover with short titles, Final Expense right next to the bright read trademark logo so that you can have a pretty good idea about the “news leaders” of the week without even looking inside.

The second level of information presentation consists of the CONTENTS list. Here all stories and columns are listed sequentially, by page numbers, which is pretty standard across the industry. However, Economist also telegraphs which stories are more important than the others by including screen boxes for the prominent stories. Such summary-boxes include a photo or drawing that captures the essence of the story, plus a few sentences and page numbers so that you can immediately jump to the story itself.

Next comes THE WORLD THIS WEEK pages which greets us with a short paragraph devoted to all the major stories of the week. Here the shorts are offered under thematic headlines and not by the physical order in which they appear in the magazine which aids comprehension and retention considerably.

On the third level of this magnificent information design, we are welcomed to LEADERS – those news stories that require serious attention. Usually 3 or 4 LEADER stories are each given a full page of detail, followed by minor leaders each of which typically takes half a page.

This is followed by LETTERS – a colorful breathing space where well-informed and usually witty reader letters are shared.

The “real magazine” begins after all these preparatory presentations, when the reader is “warmed up” properly with care, so that if you are too busy to digest the magazine cover to cover (quite a feat in itself) you can just read the shorts of THE WORLD THIS WEEK and/or a few of the LEADER stories and get the gist of what’s going on around the world.

The icing on the Economist’s cake is the SPECIAL REPORT located in the center of each issue. These reports are so timely and so detailed, I end up saving some of them even long after the magazine itself is sent to the trash bin. I have no idea how many writers and researchers are preparing these magnificent reports but quite a few of them are good enough to form the outline of a perfect master’s thesis in many universities around the world.

And yes, as you might have guessed it, I of course do have a subscription to The Economist and I recommend it to all who take delight in following the world news and keeping in touch with the new trends and issues in this integrated global village of ours.

Facebook Algorithm Debate – How to Get Onto Your Fans’ News Feed

Did you know there is a Facebook algorithm to determine what goes onto to your news feed and the feeds of your fans?

Of course this algorithm is extremely secret, but there are some very common theories on how you can improve your Facebook marketing campaign to ensure your posts get onto your fans news feed and cast your business into a positive light.

Here are a few tips:

Don’t over share.

You might assume that the more content you produce and share on your Page, the more posts will be seen in the News Feeds of your fans. This is wrong.

This tactic can backfire especially if you have a low “Page Like count”. Posting too often also causes your fans to un-Like a Page. The key is to post quality content that has the potential to go viral or receive high user feedback. Having lots of posts with low user feedback will reduce your Page’s chances of getting into the News Feeds of your fans.

As a simple rule of thumb I like to limit a Page’s daily content to one or 2 posts that I think will receive high rates of engagement. For example people will like it, comment on it, share it, or view it. Facebook can determine if your content is getting any engagement and this is believed to be a big part of the Facebook algorithm.

Vary Your Media content

Often it’s not what you’re saying, but the media content you add that sparks engagement.

If your posts include photos, videos, and polls you will get more engagement. Another strategy is posting hot topics or controversial topics with a poll, this works to spark a lot of comments.

There is also theory that a comment carries more value in the Facebook Algorithm than a like. Therefore more comments will get you more exposure on people’s news feeds. If you are posting a controversial topic or a simple poll in most cases it is better to remain neutral and let your users & fans vote and comment amongst themselves.

Viral Photos Videos or Content

This is a no brainer. If you are able to create a viral video or image it can spread like wildfire and can work to gather you even more fans to your page. This also triggers Facebook into thinking you have something really hot.

Always Provide Positive Good Messaging

This one is a bit off topic… but very important.

Many businesses sometimes underestimate the value of good public communication karlsruhe and how important it is in building your reputation and business especially on Facebook news feeds. Most importantly it is important to remember how vast the internet really is, and how it can make or break your reputation.

The internet is unforgiving!

If you make a post that casts your business into a negative light, or even send an email to a customer in an unprofessional or negative tone this can come back to haunt you and might go as far as ruining the trust or good reputation among your fans that you have worked hard to build.

Always remember that once you or your business publishes something live online, whether it be an email to someone else, image, video or Facebook post, or even a forum or blog post, this is going to be associated to your business FOREVER.

Everything has the potential to go viral even a negative post or email.

Post Images and Comments That Are Likeable

This sounds easy but it is not. It takes a lot of testing. One strategy is to go to a major business in your niche and look at their page. See what people are liking the most. Then think about creating a post similar but offering even more value or something that can spark even more user engagement on your page.

Present Your Business in an Interesting Way

People will be more apt to check out your business if you provide useful content and interesting tools for them. For example, create a case study, or instructional video, or interesting new way to do something, and incorporate what you have to offer into it.

The Facebook algorithm can be fishy at times and it is constantly changing.

What might work today could be completely wrong tomorrow. The tips above seem like they will stand the test of time since they are what Facebook is all about. Facebook will reward you if you provide good content that engages their users.
