Ingredients For the Lactation Bites Recipe

You’ll need just a few basic pantry essentials to put these lactation bites together. It is literally that easy!

This recipe uses foods that increase milk supply added with apple pie flavor.

The oatmeal, coconut and flax are the essential ingredients in these lactation energy balls. Oatmeal is a common food recommended to breastfeeding moms and great for milk supply. While ground flax is a food that boost milk supply, it also helps these bites stick together.

The coconut oil and shredded coconut give this recipe a dose of healthy fats and lauric acid which aids in breast milk production.

The dates are an excellent natural sweetener, which is why you don’t really need to add any other sweetener. Dates are high in b-vitamins, vitamins A and K, iron, and potassium which adds a lot of needed nutrition to these lactation energy bites. This recipe was originally made with Deglet Noor dates, however you can use any type of date fruit for this recipe. If you make it with medjool dates, use half as many, as they are bigger.

The apple sauce and dates in these lactation energy bites are also high in fiber, which in combo with the blackstrap molasses and ground flax is great if you are experiencing postpartum constipation.

You can also add your favorite lactation booster to this recipe to give it an additional milk making punch. Try adding 1 scoop of lactation protein powder to your lactation bites if you are experiencing low milk supply. While we did make this recipe for lactation energy bites without brewers yeast, you could certainly add some if you have it on hand for an extra boost.

Adding blackstrap molasses to your energy bites gives touch of sweetness, but also additional nutrients. Blackstrap molasses is high in calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, vitamin b-6 and copper. Just make sure to get unsulfured blackstrap molasses to get the full benefits of this superfood.

Tips for Making this Recipe for Lactation Energy Bites

Ready to give these powerful energy bites a shot? You might want to keep these little tips and tricks in mind to nail the recipe.

If you choose, you can just dump all the ingredients (minus the molasses) into the food processer and blend. You do not have to go through the step by step process. Just blend for longer until smooth. However, this does yield a slightly chunkier ball texture.

If you are not a fan of the little balls, you can also spread the mixture into a baking tray and let it sit for a while in the freezer before you get it out and cut it into squares.

Top the balls with the molasses before freezing. It will be slightly sticky after defrosting to eat.

To take these energy bites up a notch, you can also add some lactation protein powder into the mix.

Don’t skip out on adding the cinnamon or apple pie spice. It really brings out the subtle flavors of the energy bites.

When storing these energy bites, remember to freeze them separately and then transfer them to a ziploc bag or an airtight container to preserve freshness. It is best to refrigerate them once they are hard- that way, they can stay good in there for up to 10 days.
If you’re layering them in a container, make sure you have a sheet of parchment paper between each layer, so that they don’t end up sticking to each other.
