Love Letter Cookies with Jam
Baking homemade heart cookies is a heartfelt gesture of love! In this article, I would like to show you how to make delicious love letter cookies that will not only delight the palate but also the heart of your loved one. These cookies are perfect for romantic occasions such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, anniversaries or just to give someone special a sweet surprise.
In our hectic world, it’s important to appreciate the little things and show our love and appreciation to the people we care about. Homemade cookies are a wonderful and personal way to do just that. The love letter cookies are not only delicious and appealing, but also a romantic gesture that expresses your love.

Ingredients for Cookies with Jam
- Flour (all-purpose, wheat or spelt flour)
- Powdered sugar
- Vanilla sugar (or ground bourbon vanilla) Vegan butter
- Jam (e.g. strawberry, raspberry or cherry jam without chunks)
How to make Love Letter Cookies with Jam

Step 1: Make the dough
Combine the flour, powdered sugar, vanilla sugar and salt in a bowl. Add the butter in small pieces and knead into a smooth dough (add 1-3 tablespoons of cold water if necessary). Shape the dough into a flat ball, wrap tightly in cling film and place in the fridge for approx. 30 minutes (or overnight).
Step 2: Shape love letter cookies
Remove the ball of dough from the fridge and roll out to a thickness of approx. 3 mm on a lightly floured work surface. Cut the dough into equal squares using a knife or a pizza roller and cut out small hearts from the scraps of dough. Spread about 1-2 teaspoons of jam in the middle of the squares and moisten the corners with a little water. First fold the bottom corner towards the center. Then fold the outer corners inwards and finally seal the center with a pastry heart.
Step 3: Bake the cookies with jam
Place the love letter cookies on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving a little space between them. (Optional for more shine and color as a vegan egg wash substitute: Mix some dairy-free milk or cream with turmeric and brush the cookies with it). Bake the love letter cookies at 356 °C (180 °C) for approx. 12-15 minutes (depending on size) until lightly golden brown. Then leave to cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar as desired and decorate with Lovely Sprinkles!
Decorating cookies – 7 simple ideas
Decorating cookies can be creative and fun. The love letter cookies are cute and pretty as they are, but you can of course decorate them even more excitingly. Here are some tips on how to decorate cookies:
- Icing: Whip up an icing from powdered sugar and water or lemon juice. Divide it into different bowls as desired and color it with food coloring. Use piping bags or small spoons to apply the icing to the cookies.
- Sprinkles and pearls: Use colorful sprinkles or sugar pearls to give the cookies a textured and shiny surface.
- Chocolate: Melt chocolate and dip the cookies in it or apply it with a spoon. Then decorate them with nuts, dried fruit or shredded coconut.
- Fondant: Roll out the fondant thinly and cut it into shapes to fit the cookies. Place the fondant on the cookies and press it down lightly.
- Edible colors: Use edible colors or food coloring pens to paint directly on the cookies or draw fine lines and patterns.
- Icings and glitter: Experiment with different icings, including royal icing, and add edible glitter or powdered sugar to create a sparkling effect.
- Stencil technique: Place stencils or stencils on the cookies and dust them with powdered sugar or cocoa to create patterns.
Tips for making perfect Valentine‘s Day Cookies:
- Make sure that the butter is not too cold so that it can be kneaded well with the other ingredients to form a hom*ogeneous shortbread cookie dough.
- Allow the dough to rest in the fridge so that it does not stick when you roll it out.
- When cutting out the cookies, make sure they are of an even thickness to achieve an even baking result.
- Make sure that the oven is properly preheated to ensure that the cookies are evenly browned and golden brown.
- Decorate the cookies with love and creativity to give them a personal touch.
Can I make Cookie Dough ahead?
Of course you can! You can also prepare the cookie dough in advance. After making it, wrap it airtight in cling film and place it in the fridge overnight. Make sure that it softens slightly at room temperature before further processing so that it is easier to roll out and the cookies are tender. How to store Cookies with Jam
To preserve the freshness and taste of the jam cookies, they should be stored in an airtight container or cookie tin. You can also place parchmenr paper between the layers of love letter cookies to prevent them from sticking together. At room temperature, the cookies will stay fresh and delicious for up to 7 days.

- 2 tsp (8 g) vanilla sugar or ¼ tsp ground bourbon vanilla
- 7 oz (200 g) vegan butter
- 3-4 tbsp jam e.g. strawberry, raspberry or cherry jam without pieces

Combine flour, powdered sugar, vanilla sugar and salt in a bowl. Add the butter in small pieces and knead into a smooth dough (add 1-3 tablespoons of cold water if necessary). Shape the dough into a flat ball, wrap tightly in cling film and place in the fridge for approx. 30 minutes (or overnight).
Preheat the oven to 356 ℉ (180 °C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Take the dough ball out of the fridge and roll out to a thickness of approx. 0.1-inch (3 mm) on a lightly floured work surface. Cut the dough into squares of the same size using a knife or pizza roller and cut out small hearts from the scraps of dough.
Spread about 1-2 teaspoons of jam on the center of the squares and moisten the corners with a little water. First fold the bottom corner towards the center. Then fold the outer corners inwards and finally seal the center with a pastry heart.
Place the love letters on the prepared baking tray, leaving a little space between each. (Optional for more shine and color: Mix some plant-based milk or cream with turmeric and brush the cookies with it).
Bake the love letter cookies for approx. 12-15 minutes (depending on size) until lightly golden brown. Then leave to cool completely.
Dust with powdered sugar as desired and decorate with Lovely Sprinkles. Enjoy!
