The Scope and Value of Learning

Learning is full of wonders. Some people are brilliant with their straight A’s; others find it hard to cope in school – despite being smart. We have all heard of success stories about individuals who have no professional degrees. While going to school remains to be the best method and the most recommended avenue for learning, there is no single style that is effective for everyone. There are various methods by which people learn. And no one can say that their own is a better style of learning.

Reports have made mention of different learning styles. What follows are some of the most popular types of learning. As you read along, consider which type of learning will effectively work for you?

People normally have three different reactions upon edulize learning that the pot is hot.

· The Listeners = Heard the Instruction > Was Convinced > Didn’t Do Anything
o This group of people pays attention, believes yet do not act on it, either because they do not trust themselves that much (too afraid to try) or they are not interested at all.

· The Observers = Saw Someone Reach for the Pot > But Did Not Dare Follow
o These people are very observant. Once they learned about something, they find out more about it and satisfy themselves with theories but they do not have the will to pursue through taking actions.

· Touched the Pot = The Adventurers
o The moment these people receive information, they quickly respond to it; sometimes without even verifying its credibility. In the process, they eventually learn the advantages and disadvantages.

The Process of Learning
The way of learning may be different from one person to another. But generally, it goes through a process – from attention to information to comparison to understanding and finally to application.

Attention. There are many ways to capture one’s attention. It makes people interested to receive information. However, the manner of presenting the information matters a lot. Attention determines how people will show interest.

Information. Acquiring information is the next process. How useful and effective is the available information? A presentation may contain beneficial data but since people learn differently, their responses will tend to vary. A person may be very satisfied while another may not have learned anything at all. Some people learn through visuals, others through audio and still other people learn through practice.

Comparison. After receiving the information, people will find its connection to their actual experiences. This is the time for reflection, clarification and evaluation of every idea that has been collected. How real are those ideas and how do they affect a person’s life?

Understanding. This is the process where people apply the differences in their own perspective, experience and the style of their learning. It is this stage where a person can assess how much knowledge he has gained.

Application. This is the final determining phase of one’s learning. Application recognizes the fact that what you have learned may be valuable or not. Furthermore, it also confirms the person’s complete understanding of a certain subject.

Full of mysteries, learning performs a vital role in each one’s life. Taking this into consideration, every person who values learning and personal advancement should not mind spending time on it, either in a formal education setting, or in the school of life.
