What is Eggnog?

Eggnog is a sweetened cold drink often served around the holiday season. It is made from milk, sugar, spices, egg yolks, and whipped egg whites. Eggnog is often spiked with alcohol like rum, bourbon, or brandy. More than anything else, eggnog is known as the quintessential Christmas drink!

What is a Latte?

A traditional latte – or more accurately, a caffè latte – is a drink made with 1 part espresso and 2 parts steamed milk with a light layer of frothed milk on top. It is thought to originate in Italy but is certainly popular over here in North America!

What is an Eggnog Latte?

In an eggnog latte, some of the milk you would find in a regular latte is replaced by eggnog! The eggnog is steamed or frothed, mixed with the other ingredients (sweeteners and flavors), and then added to the espresso. From there, the latte is topped with frothed milk and spices.

What does an eggnog latte taste like?

Eggnog is thick and creamy and tastes sweet and warm. The best way to describe eggnog is a Merry Christmas in a cup! You’ll taste sweet vanilla and sugar along with warm, spicy nutmeg and cinnamon with a touch of coffee flavor.

Tips and Variations

  • Don’t heat your eggnog too much or the eggs may begin to cook, creating a big, ugly mess. Make sure your eggnog is just warmed.
  • Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg for a little flavor!
  • Brew the espresso over ice and add more ice at the end for an iced eggnog latte.

How to froth milk without a milk frother

There are two ways you can froth your milk without a milk frother:

  1. Place the warm milk in a jar, secure the lid, and shake until the volume of milk increases. This is the method I use in this recipe.
  2. Blend warm milk in a blender until it just about doubles in volume. This is a great option for anyone who does not want to manually shake a jar of milk.

FAQ

What spice is most often used in eggnog?

Nutmeg is the spice most commonly used in eggnog. I like to use cinnamon as well because I think nutmeg and cinnamon go very well together!

Do you need an espresso maker to make an eggnog latte?

No way lovely! Espresso does taste very good in this recipe, but strongly brewed coffee is just as delicious.

Can I use regular coffee instead of espresso?

Yes, you can! All you have to do is brew STRONG coffee instead. I recommend using dark roast and doubling the coffee grounds!

Is eggnog in coffee good?

Eggnog in coffee is awesome! It’s one more thing to look forward to during the Christmas season. Eggnog creates a sweet, creamy coffee drink that screams CHRISTMAS the second you taste it!

What kind of coffee is best in eggnog lattes?

In all honesty, espresso tastes best in this recipe, but regular coffee can still be almost as delicious! My two biggest tips for you are:

  1. Use dark roast coffee for a stronger flavor (akin to the likes of espresso).
  2. Brew your coffee strong; you can even use extra coffee grounds!

Can you use homemade eggnog?

For sure! Homemade eggnog goes super well with this recipe.

Can you add alcohol to the latte?

Absolutely. Many people add brandy, bourbon, or rum to their eggnog, so adding alcohol to this latte makes complete sense!

Can you make an eggnog latte in advance?

Due to its frothy nature, this latte would not be very good if you left it for a few hours. However, you can separate some of the ingredients into mason jars ahead of time so the recipe a little quicker to make when you want to drink the latte. For more information, check out the “How To Store” section below.

Did Starbucks® discontinue the eggnog latte?

At least in North America, Starbucks® has not had the eggnog latte on their holiday menu in 2021 or 2022. This does not necessarily mean it will never be on the menu again, but it is not likely that this latte will be put back on the menu in the near future. Which is one of the reasons this recipe is so convenient!

How to Store

You can store this recipe in separate mason jars. All you have to do is follow the instructions in the recipe to combine each jar when you want to drink the latte. Separate the jars like this:

  • Coffee jar: make your coffee and let it cool. Place in a mason jar in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • Eggnog mixture jar: combine eggnog, vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg as said in the recipe. Store in a mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Milk jar: measure out the right amount of milk and store it in a mason jar in the fridge.

Dietary Considerations

This recipe is already gluten-free, so no need to worry about that! In order to make this recipe dairy-free, all you have to do is replace the milk with non-dairy milk like soy, coconut, or almond milk. Making this recipe vegan may seem like an impossible task, but I’ve got you lovely! Replace the milk with plant-based milk and buy yourself somevegan eggnog!
